A Letter to Your Future Self Template
Copy the letter to your future self template below, replace the brackets with your own words, and choose a date to read it. It includes space for everyday memories, something you are working through, questions, and hopes. Use the whole letter or keep only the lines you want; the short version and filled-in example give you two other starting points.
Copy this fill-in-the-blank letter
Written on: [month, day, year]. Read on: [month, day, year]. Dear future me, Today I am [a few words about life right now]. An ordinary day looks like [a small detail from my routine]. I want you to remember [a moment and why it matters]. Lately, I am proud of [something I did or tried], and I am figuring out [something unfinished]. By the time you read this, I hope [a hope]. My next step is [one action I can take]. I wonder: [a question only future me can answer]? Whatever has changed, please remember [something I want to carry with me]. Before I go, one detail I do not want to lose is [a sound, place, habit, or phrase]. Take care, Me, as I am today.
A completed example
Here is an invented example: Dear future me, Today I am settling into a new routine and still taking the long way to the grocery store. Most evenings end with toast and a book I keep restarting. Remember the afternoon you finally put a chair by the window; that corner made the apartment feel like home. I am proud that I asked for help this week. I am still figuring out how to make time for drawing. I hope you have filled a sketchbook by now. My next step is to leave it open on the table. Do you still draw the view from that window? If your plans changed, I would like to hear what took their place. Take care, Me, as I am today.
A shorter template for a quick note
Written on: [date]. Read on: [date]. Dear future me, Right now, life feels [description]. Please remember [one ordinary moment]. I am trying [something new or unfinished], and I hope [one hope]. When you read this, tell me: [one question]? Whatever the answer, I want you to know [something kind and true]. From, Me today.
Optional add-in: a snapshot of today
Add this passage after the memory line if you want more room for daily life: At the moment, I keep listening to [a song, artist, or kind of sound]. The thing I reach for most is [an object and what I use it for]. A place I know well is [a place], especially [a detail I notice there]. Something I say all the time is [a phrase in my own words]. I would probably spend a completely free afternoon [an activity]. One tiny annoyance I might laugh about later is [a minor inconvenience]. If any of these details seem strange when you read them, here is the context: [what future me might have forgotten].
An alternate passage for an uncertain time
If the hopeful lines feel difficult to fill in, replace them with this passage: I do not know what I want everything to look like yet. What I can tell you is [something true about today]. One thing taking up my attention is [a situation I choose to describe]. For now, I would like more room for [something that matters to me]. I am leaving this question open: [something I am curious about]? You do not owe this letter a success story. If life went somewhere I could not imagine, I hope you can tell me about it in your own words. Keep any part of this passage that sounds like you; change the rest.
Make an editable or printable copy
Select the template text and copy it into a document or notes app. Replace the bracketed prompts, remove unused lines, and put the greeting and sign-off on separate lines if you prefer a traditional letter layout. For a paper version, print your completed document or leave blank space after each prompt before printing. Write out the month in both dates so you can read them without guessing the order. The template is plain text you can edit; a printed copy can simply go in an envelope labeled with its intended reading date.
Put the finished letter in Sealday
Finish and save a separate copy first: Sealday does not save unfinished letters for you to resume later; leaving the creation screen can discard your text. In a new capsule, enter a Title and paste the letter into Message. Continue to the date step and choose a future date; use the custom date option to match the date in your letter. On the final step, select a reveal mode. Exact shows the opening date and days remaining. Check the summary, then tap SEAL. The letter stays closed within the app until its opening time. Sealday stores the capsule on your device; it does not email the letter to you. Keep your separate copy somewhere you will know to look for it.
Check the version you are keeping
Search your finished copy for opening and closing brackets to catch any prompts you missed. Check that the reading date matches the envelope label or the date selected in the app. When copying an optional passage, leave out the instructions that introduce it. Then read the letter once in your normal speaking voice. If a line sounds borrowed, replace it with what you would actually say. A plain closing such as ‘Take care, Me’ is enough; you can leave the letter there.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to fill in every blank?
No. Delete any sentence you do not want to answer. You can keep the memory and question, skip the goal, or use the short template as your entire letter.
What can I write if I do not have a big goal?
Replace the hope with a curiosity: I wonder whether I still enjoy [activity]? You can also describe something you want to keep doing. The letter does not need a list of achievements.
Can I use this template for a school assignment?
Yes. Adapt the blanks to the assignment and follow your teacher's requirements for length, topics, and submission. If the letter will be collected or read, include only details you are comfortable sharing.
Can I save this as a PDF?
Copy the template into a document editor, fill it in, and use that editor's PDF option if it has one. You can also keep an editable copy so you can revise the wording before sealing it.
Is the template built into Sealday?
This template is provided on this page. To use it in Sealday, copy your finished wording into the Message field when creating a capsule, then choose the opening date in the next step.
Seal a moment today, open it when the time comes. Sealday locks a note, photos, video or a voice message until the date you choose. Everything stays on your device — no account, no cloud. When the day arrives, the seal breaks in a small ritual and the memory comes back to you.
