How Do Time Capsule Apps Keep Letters Until a Date?

A time capsule app keeps a letter until a date by saving an opening time and controlling when the letter becomes available; Sealday uses your phone’s clock to make that decision. Its seal supports a personal promise to wait, but it is not a guarantee against early access. To understand what you are trusting, check where the letter lives, which clock determines readiness, and what happens when the opening time arrives.

Keeping a letter on your phone is different from delivering it later

Sealday stores your letter and attached memories on your device, then makes the capsule ready to open when its saved opening time arrives. You return to the app to read it. Scheduled email delivery is a different arrangement: FutureMe’s Terms of Service, for example, describe letters sent to a specified email address after a chosen period or on a chosen date. That distinction matters if you expect a message in your inbox or want someone else to receive it. Sealday does not email your letter or deliver it to another person’s phone.

Which clock does Sealday use?

Sealday uses the date and time reported by your phone, rather than an independent online time check for each opening. Android Developers distinguishes the calendar clock from timers that measure elapsed time. For normal use, leave your phone’s date and time accurate; Google’s Clock Help explains automatic date, time, and time zone settings. You do not need to keep the app running through the wait, and sealing and opening a saved capsule work offline. An internet connection is not what makes a letter ready. The saved opening time and the phone’s clock determine that.

What protection does the seal actually provide?

Before a capsule is ready, Sealday’s normal screens show its sealed cover instead of the letter. This gives you a place to put a message aside without rereading it every time you open the app. Treat that as a waiting ritual, not secure custody of information that must remain inaccessible. Do not use a capsule as the sole safeguard for passwords, recovery codes, or documents whose confidentiality depends on a date restriction. Keep your phone locked and choose content you are comfortable storing there. A hidden opening date, an opening animation, and a security guarantee are separate things.

A chosen date does not always mean midnight

Sealday’s date presets count forward from the moment you select them. Tomorrow means 24 hours later; the week, month, and year options use the intervals in the table. The custom calendar instead sets the opening time to 9:00 a.m. on the selected date in the phone’s time zone at selection. There is no separate opening-hour picker. If you select Tomorrow in the evening, do not expect the letter to be ready the next morning. For a particular birthday or anniversary date, use the custom calendar and check the displayed date before sealing.

What happens if you travel or the time zone changes?

Sealday saves an opening moment, not a rule to open at the same local hour wherever you are. MDN’s Date reference explains how one moment can appear as different local dates and times in different time zones. For your capsule, that means a trip can change the local hour, and sometimes the displayed calendar date, associated with its opening. A custom date chosen for 9:00 a.m. at home does not reset to 9:00 a.m. at your destination. If a shared occasion depends on a particular city’s time, keep a separate reminder that names that city.

Surprise, Hint, and Exact change what you see

Sealday’s reveal modes control how much timing information appears while you wait. Surprise hides the opening date. Hint gives a broad indication of when the capsule will open. Exact shows the date and a countdown in the capsule’s details. All three use the same saved opening time to determine readiness; choosing Surprise does not add a stronger lock. If you want to check when a letter should become available, choose Exact before sealing. Also remember that a countdown expressed in days, months, or years is a summary, not a display of the precise opening hour.

Why does a capsule still look sealed on its opening day?

First consider the opening hour: the calendar date may have arrived while the saved time is still ahead. Next, tap the capsule. Sealday’s home screen can continue showing an older sealed state after the opening time passes; the capsule’s detail screen checks readiness again. Returning to the home screen refreshes the list. If the timing still seems wrong, check that your phone shows the correct real date, time, and time zone, then reopen the app. Do not clear app storage or reinstall it to refresh a card. If the problem continues, contact support@hugosoftware.net with the selected date and what the screen shows, without including your private letter.

Ready to open does not mean already opened

Once the opening time has passed, Sealday offers the opening action and its seal-breaking ceremony. The letter does not automatically appear on your screen just because the date arrives. You can return later: a ready capsule stays available to open, and an opened capsule remains in the Opened section. The app shows ready capsules inside the app, but does not schedule a phone notification or an email reminder. Set your own calendar reminder if you want a prompt on the day. For a long wait, keep a separate copy of irreplaceable content rather than relying on one app installation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose the exact hour a Sealday letter opens?

There is no separate hour setting. A custom calendar date uses 9:00 a.m. in the phone’s time zone when selected. Presets count forward from the time you choose them, so a preset and a custom date can have different opening hours.

Will missing the opening day make my letter disappear?

No. Passing the opening time makes an unopened capsule ready; it does not give you a one-day reading window. You can open it later as long as the capsule’s data remains available on your device.

Does my phone need to stay on until the opening date?

No. Sealday saves the opening time and checks readiness when you return. You can turn the phone off during the wait; the app does not need to count every second while it stays open.

Can I edit the date after sealing?

Sealday does not offer an opening-date editor for sealed capsules. Check your date before sealing, especially if you used a preset for something tied to a specific calendar day.

Will signing in on a replacement phone recover my capsules?

Sealday has no account sign-in or app-managed cloud library. Your phone’s Android backup may be relevant, but do not assume a replacement phone will contain every capsule. Preserve a separate copy of anything you cannot replace.

Does the gold opening ceremony change the date lock?

No. The gold ceremony changes the opening presentation. It does not change the clock used to decide when a capsule is ready or provide a stronger time lock.

Seal a moment today, open it when the time comes. Sealday locks a note, photos, video or a voice message until the date you choose. Everything stays on your device — no account, no cloud. When the day arrives, the seal breaks in a small ritual and the memory comes back to you.
